Curriculum Updates:

Reading: We began our Nonfiction units. Students are spending time focusing on a Weather topic of their choice. We are working on understanding nonfiction texts and their structures as well as how to prepare yourself for reading a nonfiction text. We finished the week practicing how to take effective notes.

Writing: We started this week by writing personal essays. Boy, do we have some opinionated kiddos! I am excited by the change in schedule that we did last week. I have really seen improvement in the stamina by having writing take place earlier in the day. I can't wait to see how it continues!

Math: We are continuing to work hard at solving multiplication problems. We've done one digit by three digit, two digit by two digit, and one digit by four digit multiplication. Students have been practicing multiplication in small groups, individually

Word Study: Students continue to amaze me at the hard work they put into word study and how much they know about phonics and spelling rules. They will take their next word study test on Wednesday.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Week of October 17

 Happy Friday!

I've been doing a lot of thinking about our class schedule. We currently have writing at the end of the day from 1:50-2:30. I've really noticed that that 30 minute time slot doesn't give us enough time for conferencing and the student's stamina in writing seems a little low (which is understandable - it's the end of the day!)

So I think a schedule change would be very beneficial! Here is the updated schedule. You will also be getting a printed copy with your child today. We will begin using this schedule on Monday, October 18th, 2021

Upcoming Events:

Tuesday, October 19th: Yoga for fourth graders!

Tuesday, October 19th: Math Quick Quiz #2

Monday, October 25th: Teaming Up Against Drugs is NO SWEAT! Wear your favorite sweats and/or Team Apparel!

Tuesday, October 26th: Stay United Against Drugs Wear Red, White, and Blue

Wednesday, October 27th: Say BOO to Drugs! Wear ghost gear OR your Halloween costume!

Thursday October 28th: No School

Friday, October 29th: No School

Curriculum Updates:

Reading: We begin reading nonfiction texts next week. Don't worry, students will still have time to read their fiction texts!

Writing: Opinion writing begins this week!

Math: We are working hard at multiplication. I am so proud of the students for being open to different strategies and finding which one works best for them. We will have a quick quiz on Tuesday.

Enjoy your weekend. 🍁

Week of October 11th

Hello! I hope you all had a great week! We had SO much fun on Friday learning and exploring Kettle Moraine! Here are some pictures:

Upcoming Events:

Tuesday, October 12th - Family Night: Show & Go Open House

Curriculum Updates:

Reading: We will be wrapping up our Interpreting Characters unit in the coming weeks! Next we will be diving into Nonfiction!

Writing: Students have been working hard throughout our Narrative unit. This unit will also be wrapping up shortly. We will be moving on to our next unit which teaches us how to note take in a way that helps us learn and understand texts better. This unit will nicely pair up with our nonfiction reading unit.

Word Study:  I was incredibly impressed with how well the students did on their Unit 1 word study test. They were sent home last week in your child's take home folder. We are moving on to Unit 2!

Math: We finished Unit 1! Woohoo! This week we will be starting unit 2 which focuses on multiplication. Some of us don't feel 100% comfortable just yet with subtraction. Don't worry parents - we will continue to work on this skill together in small groups as well as on Xtramath.

I hope you have a great week! Hope to see you all at family night, too!

Tuesday, October 12th - Family Night: Show & Go Open House (Please check for the pink flyer coming home with your fourth grader tonight!)

Curriculum Updates:

Reading: Students have really been motivated to grow their ideas about characters and read more intensely! It's awesome! They've really taken it upon themselves to reference the learning progression and aim to prove they can think deeply. We have also been working on talking and sharing more about our reading. Students are currently grouped in partnerships where they are reading short stories/picture books. This will hopefully support them when they are in partnerships and book clubs reading chapter books. We've also been working on expanding our vocabulary. There has been new vocabulary in our books that we are working to define, understand, and maybe even use in our own writing!

Writing: We are working hard at writing our realistic fiction series. The students are doing amazing at finding parts in their stories where they can really bring their characters to life! We are also working through understanding the major components of writing: trouble begins, trouble gets worse, and end/change/resolution.

Word Study: Our first unit will finish up on Monday! Tuesday will be our first Word Study test! I am confident the students will do GREAT!

Math: We finished Unit 1! Woohoo! This week we will be starting unit 2 which focuses on multiplication. Some of us don't feel 100% comfortable just yet with subtraction. Don't worry parents - we will continue to work on this skill together in small groups as well as on Xtramath.

Enjoy your weekend! Please reach out with any questions or concerns! 🎃

Thank You

It's hard to put into words how bittersweet the end of the school year is. It has truly been an honor to teach this group of fourth grad...
