Week of Jan 31st

I hope you have all had a great week! I cannot believe January is almost over!

We celebrated the end of Bend 2 in our American Revolution reading unit with a debate between the Loyalists and the Patriots to see if we would remain loyal to King George III or break free.

After the debate, all the loyalists and patriots casted their vote to see what our class would do. We voted to break free from Great Britain & King George III. Some very upset loyalists decided they would not comply and are planning on taking the next ship back to Great Britain.

Click here to access the video of our debate.

Please send your child with their roller-skating equipment in a labeled bag this week.

Upcoming Events:

Monday, January 31st: Unit 6 Fundations Test

Monday, January 31st: Pajama / Comfy Clothes Day

Monday, February 28th: We will likely be taking a field trip with Mr. Guell to Skate City in celebration of finishing the roller-skating unit in Gym. More information to come.

Monday, February 21st: No School for Students

February 22nd - 25th:

A Message from the third grade members of Environmental Club:

NDLC will be collecting your Little Bites bags from now until May! The Entenmann company has a collection service where if you send in a box of recycled Little Bites bags they will give you money for your organization. It's a nice way to raise money for our school for recycling!

Here are examples of what we are collecting:

Curriculum Updates:

Reading: The debate was a success! The students have really gotten into reading about the American Revolution. Watching the debate, I am just reminded how silly our little classroom family is. I am excited to see the great work they continue to do as we finish off this unit.

Writing: I am excited to share that this week we will be done with piloting the new writing unit for Teachers College. This has been such an awesome experience that has really motivated the students to be incredible narrative writers. As a celebration, on Friday, February 4th, I would like to send out an open invitation to any guardian or family member to come join our classroom from 2:30-3 to listen to the students read their stories and show the incredible growth they've made. If you can make it, we'd love to have you!

Math: We're working hard as we continue through Unit 8. This week we've spent time working on identifying perpendicular, intersecting, and parallel lines. A fun activity that the kiddos seemed to enjoy was creating our own town map and then identiying which roads were what type of lines that we've learned. We will begin next week with a focus on quadrilaterals and their different characteristics.

Have a great weekend. 😊

Week of Jan 24th

 Hello and Happy Friday!

A highlight from this week was that the students celebrated ending the bend in our writing unit, and celebrated by teaching the third grade classes all that they've learned, how they've grown, and what to expect next year. It was amazing to watch them share with students younger than them. Some students took the extra initiative to make the third graders charts that they could take with them. It was truly an awesome experience and the third grade teachers let us know that the third graders LOVED it.

Upcoming Events:

Monday, January 24th: No School for students

Monday, January 24th: NDLC's Pagoni's Day. From 11am to 8pm 10% of sales benefit NDLC

Tuesday, January 25th: Dress as a Game Show Host or Game Board Character

Wednesday, January 26th: Sports / Athletic Wear Day

Thursday, January 27th: Favorite Sports Team Gear

Friday, January 28th: Wear Black / Glow Day

Monday, January 31st: Pajama / Comfy Clothes Day

Curriculum Updates:

Reading: Students are working on research projects focusing on a specific subtopic of the American revolution. I have loved watching these kids start to form their own ideas and opinions about if they would be a loyalist or a patriot. It is really amping them up for when we do our big debate! We are also working hard at understanding how to note-take when reading nonfiction texts. Not everything is worth writing in our notebooks so we are trying to understand and synthesize information into our notebook.

Writing: We are cruising on through this awesome new unit from Teacher's College. As you've noticed students have been coming home with nightly writing homework. Their homework should  be either stapled into their agenda or in their homework folder. It is a pink half sheet that almost looks like a letter from me. This homework prompts students for the following day of writing work. Please check with your child each night to make sure they are getting this completed.

Math: We are in Unit 8! We have been working on studying points, rays, and angels. Each kiddo got a protractor last week which has been very exciting...and very confusing to some. Don't worry! I will make sure they get much more practice with their protractors! We haven't had much time for math this week due to iReady, but we will make sure to get back to our normal schedule and prioritize math next week.

Have a great weekend. 😊

Week of Jan 17th

 Happy Friday, everyone!

Another great week in fourth grade down. I can't believe I only get your kiddos for about 4ish months! Time is flying!

Students worked so hard on their iReady tests this week. I am so impressed at their growth and I can't wait to share that information with you, too. I will send a Remind message when iReady reports head home.

Also, here's a silly moment from this week. One morning meeting question this week was "If you were president for a week, what would you do?" Here a picture of their response. I am impressed by how many students are really eager to change those gas prices! 🤣

Upcoming Events:

Friday, January 21st: Early Release AND End of 2nd Quarter

Monday, January 24th: No School for students

Monday, January 24th: NDLC's Pagoni's Day. From 11am to 8pm 10% of sales benefit NDLC

Week of January 10th

 Hi Families!

I hope your 2022 has been off to a great start! It has been a busy first week back for all. I was out on Thursday and Friday so I apologize for anything that has slipped by. I will be back and ready to jump back into it tomorrow! Thanks for understanding and patience. I appreciate it!

Homework Update: You may have noticed that your child has been coming home with regular writing homework. This homework is apart of the work we are doing while piloting for Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, Columbia University! This homework usually is a printed on a pink half sheet of paper and almost looks like more of a letter. I have been requiring kiddos to staple into their agenda. That way it is right there next to their reading log!

NDLC still launching our #NDLCReads campaign on social media. In class we are making a "bookshelf" display where students show books that they've read. Some ways you can participate at home include:

  • Snap a photo of your student reading at home
  • Post it to any social media platform with the hashtag #NDLCReads
  • Tag us on Facebook using @ndlccharterschool

At the end of each week, your child's name will be entered in a book drawing to be held January 28th!

Upcoming Events:

Monday, January 10th: Reading iReady (50%)

Tuesday, January 11th: Reading iReady (remaining 50%)

Wednesday, January 12th: Math iReady (50%)

Thursday, January 13th: Math iReady (remaining 50%)

Friday, January 21st: Early Release AND End of 2nd Quarter

Monday, January 24th: No School for students

Curriculum Updates:

Reading: We have launched into our Reading History unit where we get to dive into texts and information all about the American Revolution. This unit has got to be one of my favorites, so I can't wait to navigate through this learning with your child!

Writing: As you know, we are currently piloting a unit for Teachers College! This is such an honor and such an amazing experience for our school and your children! We've been working hard at coming up with narrative stories to draft. We think about people, places, and BIG moments that happened to us that we can practice writing to be a stronger writer!

Math: We are in Unit 8! We have been working on studying points, rays, and angels. Each kiddo got a protractor last week which has been very exciting...and very confusing to some. Don't worry! I will make sure they get much more practice with their protractors!

Stay well & stay warm ☃

Thank You

It's hard to put into words how bittersweet the end of the school year is. It has truly been an honor to teach this group of fourth grad...
